Master Corporal Colin Bason (28) was
serving with the Task Force in Afghanistan when a vehicle he was
riding in was destroyed by a road side bomb. MCpl Bason along with
five of his fellow soldiers and a Afghanistan national were killed
instantly.
Colin grew up in Abbotsford BC and
later joined The Royal Westminster Regiment. Before heading to
Afghanistan, Colin had served a tour in Bosnia a few years back. He
is survived by his parents and spouse Katrina Blain and daughter
Vienna Bason.
On 17 July, a military funeral was
held in Aldergrove for Colin. It was estimated that 1100 people
attended the service and was made up of fellow soldiers, retired
soldiers, law
enforcement, corrections, ambulance & fire service and the general public.
Many government officials attended including the Lieutenant Governor
of BC, local MP's, MLA, and city officials.
The procession started at a local
funeral home and traveled through the streets of Aldergrove to the
church. The roads were closed and anyone standing on the side of the
road stopped to pay respects. A few were even noticed to be
emotionally affected by the scene. Colin's coffin was draped with
the CF flag and was being carried on the back of a fully restored
World War II Bren Gun Carrier. Truly a fitting ride for a fallen
infantry soldier.
Colin Bason was the first soldier
from the Regiment to be killed in action since 1945.
